Showing Up Isn’t Enough: Ability, Motivation, and Attitude

By Coach Adam | 28:Tenn Fitness | Hendersonville, Tennessee

Yesterday, former collegiate football coach Lou Holtz passed away at the age of 89. Over the years, he shared many memorable lessons, but one quote of his has always stuck with me:

Ability is what you’re capable of doing.
Motivation determines what you do.
Attitude determines how well you do it.

That last line might be the most important one.

Most people focus on ability. They want the perfect workout plan, the perfect nutrition strategy, the perfect program. But ability alone rarely determines success. Plenty of capable people never reach their potential.

Then there’s motivation. Motivation helps you start. It gets you through the door of the gym. It gets you to sign up, schedule the session, and show up.

And showing up matters. In fact, there’s a famous quote often attributed to Woody Allen: “Eighty percent of success is just showing up.”

But eventually, showing up isn’t enough.

What really separates people over time is attitude.

You can show up and still have a poor attitude. You can drag yourself through a workout, complain the entire time, rush through the sets, and treat the whole thing like something you just have to survive.

Technically, you showed up.

But you didn’t really do the work.

Your attitude determines your effort. And your effort determines your results.

This is why attitude is so central to the culture we try to build at 28:Tenn Fitness. One of our core values is No CBD—No Complaining, Blaming, or Defending.

Complaining drains your energy.
Blaming removes responsibility.
Defending keeps you stuck where you are.

None of those mindsets leads to progress.

There’s a verse in Ecclesiastes that captures something powerful about this idea. Ecclesiastes 3:22 concludes with the encouragement to enjoy your activities, because that is your reward.”

That’s a powerful reminder.

The reward isn’t just the number on the scale, the weight on the bar, or the finish line of the race. The reward is also the process itself—the act of moving your body, pushing yourself, and growing stronger.

When you enjoy the process, your attitude shifts.

You work harder.
You stay more consistent.
You push yourself when things get uncomfortable.

And over time, those small differences compound into remarkable results.

So yes—be strong and do the work.

But also remember this: enjoy the work.

Bring a good attitude to the gym. Encourage the people around you. Take pride in the effort you’re putting in today.

Because ability may determine what you can do.

Motivation may determine what you start doing.

But attitude will determine how far you go.

And in the end, that makes all the difference.

Be strong, and do the work.
