Groundhog Day

Although over three weeks removed, I wanna talk about Groundhog’s Day.  Not so much the holiday (really, is it a holiday?!), but the movie.  And, although delayed, I didn’t wanna wait 49 more weeks before sharing the wisdom that’s found in this classic. (To my wife: I know you think Groundhog Day is a terrible movie, but you’re wrong.  According to the American Film Institute, it is the 34th funniest movie of all time.  Two other websites had it ranked 18th and 5th.  Fifth!) If […]

The Sleepaway Pill: Lose Fat While You Sleep . . . Kinda

If I had a pill that would help you lose fat while you slept, would you take it?  Here’s how it works. You take one tablet every night right before going to bed.  That’s it. Although modifying your diet and beginning an exercise program will expedite fat loss, you don’t have to do either.  But, for the pill to work, you must take it on a completely empty stomach.  To ensure the tablet’s efficacy, you mustn’t eat three hours before taking the pill.  If you […]

Plug the Time Leaks, Find the Time Gifts

At my local YMCA, I passed a large group of parents, each of them on their smartphones, waiting for their kids to get out of a martial arts class.  I wonder, how many of them have ever said, “I don’t have time to exercise.”? Have you ever said it?  Have you ever said it while on your smartphone seated in a gym?! For the majority of apparently healthy adults, exercise isn’t an issue of time, it’s an issue of priority.  If exercise and the subsequent […]

Have My Pumpkin Pie and Eat It Too?! How I’m Gonna Enjoy My Thanksgiving Without [Completely] Sacrificing My Goals

I’m gonna refrain from searching the Internet this morning.  But if I did, how many Thanksgiving-themed fitness and nutrition articles might I find?  Well, whatever that number is, I’m adding one more. I had a coach once tell me no one cares what I do [for my fitness and nutrition].  People wanna know what they need to do.  I get where he’s coming from, but why do I often get asked about what I eat and do for exercise by people if they don’t care?! […]

Quiz Time! Fill in the Blank: Information. __________. Transformation.

I’ve been in the fitness and nutrition industry for nearly 20 years.  But it wasn’t until 2011 that I learned a life-changing, career-saving lesson.  Dare I call it an epiphany? I studied nutrition in college.  Actually, “studied” may be a stretch.  I took nutrition in college (yeah, that’s better).  It wasn’t until I was outta college that I actually started studying it.  In my studying of nutrition, I gained a lot of information.  And it was this information that I passed along to my clients. Admittedly, though, […]

Disappointment Lies Between Your Expectations and Your Reality

Imagine for a moment you’re a no-name athlete representing your no-name country in the Olympics.  No one expects much from you.  You and your country are just happy you’ve been invited to the dance.  You come out, compete in your event, kick butt, and, surprisingly, finish 8th.  You’re the 8th best in the world in your event!  Immediately, you become your tiny nation’s most notable figure. Now, imagine you’re the top Olympic athlete for a “superpower” country in your respective sport.  You’re so good in […]
