When I was a Kid

I’m writing today in defense of kids everywhere. I’m defending them from adults who criticize them for not riding their bikes everywhere; for not staying out and playing until the street lights come on; for sitting around watching television and playing video games; and for spending countless hours texting their friends and updating their “status”. And most of all, I wanna defend them from listening to an adult say, “When I was a kid, I would [fill in the blank].” That’s great that when you […]

The Having is in the Doing

“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” ~ Someone cleverer than me I don’t wanna be a complainer (well, I do for this post), but there are a number of things I don’t like doing.  By no means is this an exhaustive list, nor is it in any order, but it’s mine and I wanna share it. Cleaning the kitchen Returning and making phone calls to prospects, friends, and family Laundry Making my bed Disciplining […]

Man, You’re Fit!

I was preparing to leave the gym after a sweat-producing workout the other day. I gave my forehead one last wipe with the bottom of my t-shirt. In the act, I exposed my midsection. When I dropped my shirt, I heard someone say, “You’re pretty fit!” How did he know (yes, sadly, it was a “he”)? Confession: I’m the least active I’ve been, perhaps, in my entire adult life. (Shh, tell no one.) That doesn’t mean I’m the least fit (but it might), nor does […]

Television Rots Your Body

I used to be a big entertainment guy.  I enjoyed watching [a lot of] TV and movies.  But now, not so much.  I was thinking of why that is. Parents might say it’s because I have three kids.  (Thank you for thinking more of me as a father than you should.)  Business owners, workaholics, and overachievers might say it’s because I’ve got a business to grow and run.  (I’d like to think I “hustle” like that.)  “Others” might say it’s because it’s a waste of […]

What Not Learning Spanish Taught Me About Fitness and Nutrition

I took my first Spanish class the summer between the seventh and eighth grade. In high school, English was the only class I took as much as Spanish. In college, I took four semesters of it. And as I sit here today, typing this post, I’m as far from speaking the language as you may be from accomplishing your health and fitness goals. Although I still don’t know how to speak Spanish, having now been in the fitness industry for nearly 20 years, I’ve concluded […]

New Year, New You

New year, new you.  Whether this will be your first attempt at a new resolution or your tenth at an old one, I applaud you. Ultimately, whatever your resolution, I want to encourage you to be strong and do the work!  But, me being a fitness and nutrition coach, and this being a fan page of a fitness and nutrition coach, I’m gonna address, well, fitness and nutrition.  And though this post is targeted toward fitness and nutrition, the principles that lie within can apply […]
